The Idaho State University Chinese Student Association has collected nearly $4,000 in funds for victims of the May 12 earthquake in the Sichuan Province in China.

The students announced that they were setting up a fund on May 16. Through June 4, donations totaled $3,862.29.

The donations are being processed through the ISU Foundation. They are scheduled to be forwarded this week to the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., which will then turn over the funds to the Red Cross Society of China.

“We have been surprised by the amount of donations by the ISU and Pocatello communities,” said Xiaowen Mei, treasurer for the ISU Chinese Student Association. “The amount donated has exceeded our expectations.”

The death toll for the earthquake has risen to nearly 70,000 and it has devastated the region.

Donations can continue to be sent to the ISU Foundation – China Earthquake Relief Fund, via mail at 921 S. Eighth Ave., Stop 8050, Pocatello, ID 83209; by visiting the Foundation Office in Room 121 of the ISU Administration Building; or online. All donations must clearly state “ISU Foundation – China Earthquake Relief Fund.”
