CEE field director to participate in study tour of Republic of Georgia
March 3, 2008
Janaan Haskell, field director at Idaho State University’s Center for Economic Education, will participate in the National Council for Economic Education study tour to the Republic of Georgia from March 5 through 16.
Haskell is one of 12 educators chosen nationwide to participate in the tour. She is responsible for teaching K-12 educators how to teach economics and personal finance in the classroom. Her area of responsibility includes Idaho Administrative Regions 5 and 6, which reaches from Salmon to Bear Lake. Haskell’s hope is for all economics teachers to have the opportunity to write a grant and go on the tour.
“If teachers participate they will have the information to educate students on the global economy and to focus on understanding other cultures’ economy as well as our own,” she said.
Prior to their international departure, tour participants will attend a two-day orientation in Washington, D.C., where they will be briefed on the history and structure of NCEE, tour objectives and expectations, trip logistics, key players, cultural sensitivity exercises and information on educational systems of countries visited.
The 10-day tour is funded by the U.S. Department of Education in coordination with the U.S. Department of State. It will focus on economic education activities. One goal of the tour is to help participants learn about the educational reforms underway and the realities people in other countries face in their everyday lives during an economic transition. Participants will observe Georgian educators in classroom settings at elementary and secondary schools.
Another purpose is for educators to gain knowledge through the sharing of ideas and experiences. Teachers will have the opportunity to observe teacher-training activities and attend meetings with ministry officials and other educational leaders. U.S. participants will also learn about training and delivery systems, curriculum and materials development, standards and assessment in the Republic of Georgia.
