Davis Gallery to present exhibit by Boise artist Hill
August 28, 2008
The first exhibition of the fall semester at the John B. Davis Gallery at Idaho State University is “REUNION” by Boise artist Molly Hill. Exhibition dates are Thursday, Aug. 28, through Friday, Sept. 19.
A closing reception will be held on Friday, Sept. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. Hill will also give an artist lecture at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, in Room 401 of the Fine Arts building.
Hill is one of four visiting artists this semester exhibiting at the Davis Gallery. She received her BFA from Boise State University in 1997 and was accepted into the University of Washington's MFA program in 1998. That same year, her mother became ill with cancer and Hill returned to Boise to care for her.
Hill stayed in Boise, continued to develop her art and began showing in local juried exhibits. Stewart Gallery in Boise and the Grover/Thurston Gallery in Seattle were soon representing her. She has shown at the Art Spirit Gallery in Coeur d'Alene and Anne Reed in Sun Valley. In 2003, she joined the J Crist Gallery and continues to show her work both there and at Grover/Thurston. The Boise Art Museum has one of her works in its permanent collection.
“I started the journey toward art in my 40s,” Hill says, “considered late in this day and age of young whippersnapper art stars. I may never be a celebrity artist, be profiled in a fancy art magazine or show up in Janson's art history books, but I have seen good art. I know what it looks like. I continue to strive to get there. My next painting is always my best one.”
Her exhibit at the Davis Gallery is an especially poignant one for Hill because it is happening in conjunction with her 40-year Pocatello High School reunion. “It's been said that you can never go home,” Hill says, “but with this exhibit and this reunion, that's exactly how I feel, like I'm coming home.”
These events are sponsored by U.S. Bank in cooperation with the Connie Smith Bowen Art Series at ISU and are open to the public at no charge. The Davis Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
