‘A Season of Note’ to present energetic Scrap Arts Music concert Jan. 9 at Stephens Center
December 19, 2008
The Idaho State University “A Season of Note” fine arts series will present Scrap Arts Music at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 9 in the Joseph C. and Cheryl H. Jensen Grand Concert Hall in the L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center.
Scrap Arts Music (www.scrapartsmusic.com) uses instruments fashioned from industrial scrap and offbeat materials to create performances that excite the senses with intricate rhythms, raw energy and athletic choreography.
The group features five musicians who deliver “adrenaline-laced,” “power percussion” presentations using more than 145 invented instruments hand-crafted from shiny metal, creating original music on one-of-a-kind mobile sculptures.
This quintet has entertained audiences on four continents, receiving positive reviews from a variety of media critics. The “Swansea Evening Post” in the United Kingdom called the Scrap Arts Music concert there “Pure magic.” “The Philadelphia Inquirer” describes the show “visually riveting,” while “The Age” magazine in Australia calls the show “a knock out.”
Scrap Arts Music is rooted in street performance, jazz and world music traditions, and reminds some viewers of projects like “Blue Man Group” and “Stomp.”
Scrap Arts Music, based in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, has appeared at large-scale sporting events such as NBA and NHL games. It has been involved in unique collaborations with orchestras such as the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, with dance companies and with circus groups such as the Zero Gravity Circus.
Tickets are $32 main level, $28 upper level and can be purchased at the Stephens Performing Arts Center Box Office, open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays during the school year.
Tickets can also be purchased over the phone at (208) 282-3595 or online at www.isu.edu/tickets.
