Submissions sought for Brassiere Bazaar, Breast Cancer Awareness Month Art Walk
August 10, 2007
The Janet C. Anderson Gender Resource Center at Idaho State University is asking for submissions to The Brassiere Bazaar Art Show and Fundraiser in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month held in October.
Members of the public are invited to submit decorated bras for the show. Bras may be made of any material and are not required to be wearable. All entries are donations to the show and are due Oct. 1.
Submissions may be mailed to The Brassiere Bazaar, Anderson Center, Idaho State University, Stop 8141, Pocatello, ID 83209-8141. Submitters can also deliver their artwork to ISU, Graveley Hall, Room 114.
Submissions will be on display at the Mind Your Body Studio, 235 S. Main Street, Pocatello, during the Oct. 5 Art Walk. The Art Walk is free and open to the public.
The bras on display will be available for purchase as a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness and prevention programming.
While this is a fun exhibit, there is a serious underlying message. According to statistics found at www.thebreastcancersite.com, each year 182,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and 43,300 eventually die from the disease; one in eight women either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime; in addition, 1,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 400 will die this year.
Breast cancer can be a hard topic to discuss, and this event is an opportunity to get the conversation started. The Anderson Center encourages all women to perform their monthly self-checks and schedule mammograms as recommended. Educational materials will be available at the Art Walk.
The Anderson Center’s mission is to increase awareness and promote open dialogue about gender through its resources and services, educational programming and support of gender-related research.
