ISU to host teleconference, motorcycle rally in recognition of World Food Day

Idaho State University will offer a teleconference on the global perspective of hunger in recognition of the 24th annual World Food Day, observed Tuesday, Oct. 16. ISU will be part of a worldwide group viewing the broadcast. Participants may join from 10 to 11 a.m. in the basement of the Eli M. Oboler Library, Room B-66. Continuing education credits will be available to health professionals.

This is the 11th year ISU has participated in the teleconference.

After the conference the Dietetics Club will showcase a display on hunger in Idaho from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Pond Student Union Building. The club will be accepting donations to contribute to the Idaho Food Bank.

In conjunction with the display, the Dietetics Club will host a motorcycle rally Saturday, Oct. 20, at 11:30 a.m. in the north parking lot of Holt Arena. All those participating will take a 50-mile ride through southeast Idaho. The cost is free; however the club asks that attendees donate the money they would have spent on lunch to the Idaho Food Bank.

Mary Dundas, Ph.D., director of the dietetics program at ISU, hopes the broadcast and events will awaken the public to the seriousness of hunger in Idaho.

“There are hungry people in Idaho. This is not just a problem facing far-away countries,” said Dundas. “It may not be as obvious here in southeast Idaho, but it does exist.”

Beyond simply recognizing hunger as a problem, Dundas also hopes individuals will realize they can help alleviate hunger.

“This isn’t just a job for church and government programs to tackle. Individuals can do much in their communities to help others facing hunger,” Dundas said.
