International Education Week to run Nov. 12-16

A series of lectures, events and an international film festival will be held at Idaho State University Nov. 12-16 to mark International Education Week, which is sponsored by the U.S. State Department.

The purpose of International Education Week is to educate and promote international education activities. For general information about International Education Week sponsored by the U.S. State Department, go to http://iew.state.gov/.

Events planned at ISU include:

• Nov. 12-16 – All week at lunch time Chartwells will offer international foods at ISU food service venues.

• Nov. 12-14  – At 5:15 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in the Pond Student Union Building Bengal Café an International Education Week Film Festival will be held. Each day a foreign film in its original language with subtitles will be shown, and immediately afterwards a United States remake of the film will be shown. All film showings are free and open to the public.

The films for Monday are the 1995 Japanese film “Shall We Dance,” followed by the 2004 U.S. remake by the same name.  On Tuesday, the 1985 French film “Three Men and A Cradle” will be followed by the 1987 U.S. remake “Three Men and a Baby.” On Wednesday, the 1997 Spanish film “Abre los Ojos (Open your Eyes)” will be followed by the 2001 U.S. remake “Vanilla Sky.”

• Monday, Nov. 12 – International Scholar Reception from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the ISU Alumni House, 554 South Seventh Ave., Pocatello. All current international visiting scholars and ISU scholars who have worked or researched abroad, or want to do so, are invited to meet each other at a reception in the Alumni House. This is an opportunity to meet ISU visitors from abroad and to network with other ISU faculty and staff who are engaged in international education and research activities. • Tuesday, Nov. 13 – Fulbright Scholars Workshop, from 12:10 to 1:30 p.m., PSUB Bear River Room. Sharon Sieber, Ph.D.,  ISU Fulbright coordinator, will give information about Fulbright opportunities for ISU faculty and staff. Former Fulbright recipients are invited to meet potential future Fulbright Scholars to share their experiences. Light refreshments will be served. • Wednesday, Nov. 14 – “Bologna and Erasmus: Not Just a Sandwich Meat and a Dead Scholar. A Self-funded Professional Leave Abroad Experience” presentation by Susanne Forrest, director International Advising, from 12:10 to 1:30 p.m. in the PSUB Clearwater Room. Forrest will share her professional leave abroad experience in word and images. She will address the impact the Bologna Agreement and Erasmus Program have had on higher education in Europe. Profound changes in European higher education and immigration policy are threatening United State’s lead in International Education, especially on the graduate level.

She will also talk about  the personal and professional growth her time at Umea University, Sweden, and University of Regensburg, Germany, have afforded her, and be available for questions from those who would like to spend a sabbatical abroad.

• Thursday, Nov.  15 – All ISU students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to honor diversity by wearing their ethnic/traditional clothing to make diversity visible.

• Thursday, Nov. 15 – “Study Abroad in Uruguay at ORT,” 12:30 p.m., Rendezvous Complex, Room 103 A. ISU College of Business student Derek Moss spent a semester at ORT University in Montevideo, Uruguay. He will relate his experience in word and image to all students interested in studying in a Spanish-speaking country. Light refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome.

• Thursday, Nov. 15 – Annual International Student and Scholar Thanksgiving Dinner, 6 to 8 p.m. ISU LDS Institute. Once again the LDS Institute at ISU, in conjunction with the International Office, is hosting its annual Thanksgiving buffet with all the traditional favorite Thanksgiving foods. Everyone is welcome. • Friday, Nov. 16 – “Study Abroad? Of Course! A General Information Session about ISU Study Abroad Opportunities,” 3 p.m., PSUB Bear River Room.

ISU offers study abroad opportunities paying ISU tuition in more than 40 countries. Speaking the native language often isn’t required.
