Instructor of Music, Tuba
William Smith is a native of Louisville, Kentucky where he studied with the late Art Hicks, principal tubist of the Louisville Symphony. Bill received a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Tennessee Technological University where he studied with R. Winston Morris and played in the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble. Upon graduation he continued his studies at the University of New Mexico with Karl Hinterbichler and performed with the New Mexico Brass Quintet.
He was principal tubist with the United States Air Force Heritage of America Band from 1989 to 1993, contributed to several recordings and was featured as a soloist with the band and brass quintet. From 1994 to 2001 he was principal tubist with the Sun Valley Summer Symphony. As a soloist, he was a finalist in the 1983 and 1986 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference solo competitions. Bill currently is Adjunct Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium at Idaho State University, is a member of the Portneuff Brass, the Idaho Falls Symphony and the Idaho Brass Quintet.
