Boise VA Pharmacy Residency Programs

BOISE VAMC PHARMACY RESIDENCY PROGRAMS
The Boise VA Medical Center is the training site for PGY1 and PGY2 pharmacy residency programs.  The PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency program and the PGY2 Ambulatory Care Program are both accredited by the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists.  Our programs are affiliated with Idaho State University College of Pharmacy which gives candidates the opportunity to function as affiliate faculty, preceptors and lecturers for pharmacy students.  Faculty preceptor participation greatly enhances the quality of education in our programs.
PGY1 Pharmacy Practice:

  • Infectious disease
  • Pharmacoeconomics

Program Purpose:  The PGY1 Pharmacy Practice program is designed to produce pharmacists with a broad range of pharmacy experience.  Graduates may find employment in academia, inpatient pharmacies, outpatient pharmacies, and consulting.  The program lends itself to further specialization in ambulatory care, geriatrics, inpatient medicine, oncology, academics, and infectious disease.

PGY2 Ambulatory Care:
Program Requirements:

Electives are chosen to match candidate’s interests and goals.  A wide variety of elective options exist including:  academics, outpatient specialty clinic experience, pharmacoeconomics, , and oncology.

Program Purpose:  The PGY-2 Ambulatory Care residency program at Boise VAMC is designed to produce advanced pharmacy practitioners in primary care.  Graduates may find employment in academia and in institutions as ambulatory care clinical pharmacy specialists or clinical coordinators. 
We are honored to be one of five “Centers of Excellence in Primary Care Education”.  Each PGY2 resident will participate as the clinical pharmacist for the medical resident continuity clinic and will complete a team project related to the provision of patient care in an ambulatory care setting.
 Application Information:
The applicant must be a graduate of a school of pharmacy accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education, be a U.S. citizen, possess the Doctor of Pharmacy degree, be a member of a national professional pharmacy organization, and be licensed to practice in one of the States, territories of the United States, or District of Columbia.  PGY2 applicants must have fully completed a PGY1 program.
The applicant must demonstrate leadership abilities, professional competence, communication skills, scholastic achievement, dependability, and the ability to work well with others. 
These qualities will be judged through personal interviews, interviews with peers, pharmacy school transcripts and letters of recommendation from instructors, supervisors, and others acquainted with the applicant in conjunction with the application. 
Interested applicants must participate in the ASHP Resident Matching Program.
