Newspapers

The Newspaper Collection, located on the 1st and 3rd Floors, consists of print and microfilm formats, including many Idaho papers. Newspapers are also available online in full-text in some of the Library databases.

If you need help locating a print or microfilm newspaper, ask a staff member at the Circulation Desk, 1st floor. They also help with the microfilm readers/printers/scanner in the Microform Room and in making a paper copy of a newspaper article.

Print

These are currently arranged by title and consist of 34 titles (25 from Idaho, 6 from U.S. cities and 3 from international cities.
For more detailed information about the print collection.

The print issues are housed in two locations:

    • Current Newspapers (located on the 1st floor on the bottom of the current periodicals display shelves) has only the latest issue of each currently received newspaper.

Idaho State Journal (the local newspaper) current issues are kept at the Circulation Desk, until the microfilm is received. Ask at the Circulation Desk, 1st floor, to see/review any of its older issues not yet on microfilm.

  • Older Newspapers are located toward the northeast corner of the 3rd floor, near the east restrooms or by the "QH" periodicals. They are kept alphabetically by title, either until their retention period is past or microfilm copies have superseded the print issues.

Microfilm

The microfilm newspaper collection consists of 29 currently received titles and a large selection of older newspaper titles, many with long runs. These newspapers are housed in microfilm cabinets on the 1st floor, filed alphabetically by title. The collection includes many local Idaho newspapers along with some national papers, such as the New York Times (coverage from 1851 to 2009).

Online

The Library's Newspapers (Current and Historic) resources web page provides links to full-text newspaper databases, digitized historical newspapers, and selected web sites including metasites, which are useful in locating newspaper web pages.
