Please review the Graduate Admissions page of the catalog for a full list of general admissions requirements. The History Department has the following admission requirements:
- Through the Graduate School application system, applicants must submit three names of references to provide letters of recommendation, at least two of which should be from individuals familiar with their academic work.
- Through the Graduate School application system, applicants must submit a statement of interest regarding their historical studies and academic goals. Particular attention should be given to explaining how these interests and goals relate to this program.
- Applicants should have at least 12 credits of previous course work in history. Teachers with at least three years of classroom experience teaching history or social studies may request an exemption from this requirement. These applicants should address how their experience teaching provides evidence of content knowledge in their statement of interest. Students admitted under this provision need to maintain at least a 3.5 GPA over their first nine credits of graduate coursework in History.
- Applicants for Fall admission must apply by March 31st to be considered for funding, and by May 1st to be considered for admission. Applicants for Spring admission must apply by November 1st.
Your letter of intent should include:
- a discussion of how your prior experiences have prepared you for graduate-level study
- a description of your academic interests (that specify a topic, geographical region, and/or time period)
- a brief discussion of career plans or academic goals, and how you see our program helping you achieve your goals.
If you want to be considered for Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) funding, you should indicate that in the statement of interest and explain how the GTA funding would support your goals.
We evaluate applications twice a year, usually in the weeks that follow the spring and fall admission deadlines. We will evaluate your application based on the semester you want to be admitted to. For example, if you apply for admission in fall 2025, we will evaluate your application after the fall 2025 admission deadline. You can find the deadlines on the Graduate Program page or on the FAQ above.
To see what types of history you can study, please visit our faculty page to see our full-time faculty specialties. Please note, only full-time faculty supervise graduate students. Any of our adjunct or emeritus faculty cannot supervise graduate students.
For example, graduate students can't choose to study ancient Rome or China because we do not have full-time faculty with those specialties.
Usually, we are unable to offer any funded positions for spring admission. However, if you want to be considered for future GTA funding, please indicate that in your letter of intent.
