Idaho State University brings expertise to older adults across Idaho
The Kasiska Division of Health Sciences (KDHS) at Idaho State University (ISU) recently hosted a unique event with the health and well being of local older adults in mind. Taking into consideration feedback from participants at previous on-campus events, healthcare teams from across ISU took the Thomas Geriatric Symposium, previously held at ISU, “on the road” again this year. Organizers brought their expertise to the Senior Activity Center in Pocatello and the Boise Senior Center for a day, rather than asking participants to visit campus, find parking, and make their way into the Student Union.
The 12th Annual Thomas Geriatric Symposium provided interactive presentations on topics of interest for older adults in both Pocatello and the Treasure Valley in areas such as mental wellness, oral health, nutrition, and fraud protection. Older adult enjoyed games, demonstrations, and prize giveaways as well. Flu shots were administered by student pharmacists along with pneumonia vaccination screening.
“Taking the symposium to the senior centers, rather than holding it on campus again this year, is one way we are working to improve access to healthcare and health information for the Pocatello and Chubbuck older adult community,” says Chris Owens, associate vice president for health sciences at ISU, and chair for the symposium planning committee. “Additionally, holding the symposium in both Pocatello and in the Treasure Valley at the same time brings valuable information for older adults and their loved ones and caregivers to multiple areas across the state.” The symposium also was an opportunity to showcase some of the over 30 health sciences programs available at Idaho State University.
In previous years, the symposium has provided services and health information to dozens of older adults. Organizers enoyed nearly double the number of older adult participants for this year’s symposium.
