IRS Data Retrieval Tool Unavailable

The IRS Data Retrieval Tool on fafsa.gov and StudentLoans.gov is currently unavailable. IRS and Department of Education Office are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. However, at this time, the IRS anticipates the online data tool will be unavailable for several weeks.

This does not limit families' ability to apply for aid at Fafsa.gov.

IRS and Federal Student Aid Statement on Data Retrieval Tool

IRS Data Retrieval - Currently Unavailable

ISU encourages the use of the The IRS Data Retrieval Tool, which allows applicants (and parents) to access their IRS tax information and have it automatically inserted into the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

  • 2017/2018 FAFSA- Retrieval of 2015 tax information using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool is Unavailable.
  • 2016/2017 FAFSA- Retrieval of 2015 tax information using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool is Unavailable.

With just a few simple steps, the tax information can also be securely transferred into FAFSA on the Web.

Only eligible applicants will be able to retrieve IRS data. If you qualify, using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool can:

  • easily provide tax information
  • ensure accurate tax information
  • save you time
  • allow you to skip providing IRS tax transcripts,(ANCHOR TO BELOW “What if I cannot use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool”) which you will otherwise need to provide because we are unable to accept tax forms.

A tutorial on updating IRS Data on FAFSA.gov is available for you to view.

Specific questions related to the processing of your IRS tax return should be directed to the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.

How long after I file my federal tax form is the IRS Data Retrieval Tool Available?

A limited number of tax returns take longer for the IRS to process, such as when the return includes errors, is incomplete, needs further IRS review, or is impacted by identity theft.

In general, the IRS Data Retrieval Tool will be available 3 weeks AFTER filing your federal tax return electronically or 8 weeks AFTER filing a paper federal tax return.

  3. Enter Income Tax Form filed.
  4. Mark current status of federal tax return.
  5. Click on "View option to link to IRS."
    • Use the address you listed when you filed your tax return.
