National Suicide Prevention Month - Ways We Can All Make a Difference
The number of young adults reporting thoughts of suicide to mental health professionals has increased sharply during the pandemic. At Idaho State, we have a number of services and dedicated staff ready to provide help and support. These services are available to students year round, but during September, we are emphasizing the importance of being able to talk about these feelings and training in how to help their peers who are in distress.
Talk Saves Lives – Suicide Prevention Training - CATS will be offering two more opportunities to participate in the powerful workshop Talk Saves Lives – Suicide Prevention Training this fall: September 22 and November 10. This 90-minute program provides participants with a clear understanding of this leading cause of death, including the most up-to-date research on suicide prevention, and what they can do in their communities to save lives.
- Wednesday, September 22, 3:00-4:30 p.m. - offered in-person | Pond Student Union, North Fork, Salmon River Suites (3rd Floor) - Registration Required - Registration Required
- Wednesday, November 10, 3:00-4:30 p.m. offered in-person | Salmon River North Fork Room - The registration link for this training will be added to the webpage by October 1, 2021.

Mental health problems affect each of us. You can take action to RESPOND effectively. About 1 in 5 of us will experience a diagnosable mental illness this year. All of us experience emotional pain or distress at times in our lives. Most of us want to help yet often feel uncertain about what to do or say. RESPOND will empower you to offer effective support and useful referrals to a student or colleague. The course provides a basic overview of symptoms often associated with mental health problems and offers an action plan to help you RESPOND effectively. The course will address campus policies such as FERPA, as well as mental health resources.
Any Idaho State University faculty, staff, or administrators who wish to learn more about how to RESPOND to students or colleagues who are in distress. Graduate and undergraduate students who work in student-assistance roles are also welcome to attend these trainings. Questions should be directed to Counseling & Testing at (208) 240-1609.
Space is limited. RSVP required - REGISTER HERE
Students who wish to initiate services may call the CATS staff (Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) for appointment information and availability. They will guide students through the process of completing initial paperwork and obtaining an appointment for a secure and confidential meeting with a mental health provider. Students in urgent need should call the crisis line at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). If concerns are life threatening, call 911.
