Experiential Learning Opportunities for that Competitive Edge
Students who can see the completion of their studies on the horizon are probably already thinking about resumes, applications, and interviews, but a student’s first or second year of college is not too soon to begin developing a competitive edge when it comes time to apply for jobs in that dream career.
Enter the Career Advising and Experiential Learning office. This office is staffed by three coordinators who work on behalf of students to connect them with internships, job shadowing, study abroad or other exchanges, or even volunteer and service work—all of which can make students’ resumes more attractive to potential employers. Students are encouraged to meet with one of these coordinators to discuss options and get started on the path to their own personal ROAR! In the meantime, check out some of these featured signature experiences.
Job Shadowing - Selecting a career is no small decision. ISU's Job Shadowing program connects students with organizational, industry, and agency partners in our community relevant to the students' major and/or long-term career goals. These flexible, short-term opportunities give students practical experience in their area of interest, not only helping them make important professional connections, but also giving them real-world opportunities to explore their potential career while they are still in school.
National Student Exchange - What would it be like to spend a semester diving off the coast of Sitka, Alaska, or studying active volcanoes in Hawai'i? How about completing an internship at a large marketing firm in New York City? Life-changing opportunities like these and so much more are available through the National Student Exchange program.
Study Abroad - Not yet ready for an internship? What about studying abroad? Students can study for a semester or a year at one of nearly 200 campuses in the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, or Canada via our Study Abroad program (facilitated by the ISU International Programs office), paying tuition either at ISU or the resident rate at the school they choose to attend. This program
Bengal Service Corps - Volunteerism and service are not just important ways to give back to a community, but also a great way to enhance a resume. In a recent survey, 82% of employers said they would be more likely to hire a candidate with volunteer experience on their resume, and 92% believe volunteering is an effective way to improve professional skill sets. For more information, check out our Bengal Service Corps webpage, and remember that we have Experiential Learning coordinators ready to help ISU students identify their next great opportunity!
AmeriCorps & Peace Corps Prep - The AmeriCorps and Peace Corps Prep programs open doors to powerful learning experiences. Americorps is a network of national service programs made up of three primary programs that take different approaches to improving lives and fostering civic engagement. Members commit their time to address critical community needs like increasing academic achievement, mentoring youth, fighting poverty, sustaining national parks, preparing for disasters, and more. The Peace Corps Prep program integrates coursework and field experience to help students gain sector-specific skills (education, health, environment, youth in development, community economic development), language proficiency, intercultural competence, as well as develop their leadership skills. Once students complete the different components of the program, they receive a certificate from the Peace Corps and a competitive edge when they apply to the Peace Corps or similar work with other organizations.
