Hazardous building materials
Hazardous building materials are chemicals or compounds that are commonly encountered when building or remodeling. Although hazardous building materials have greatly decreased since the late 1970s some hazardous building materials may be reserved for special use or left over from original construction. However, many buildings may still contain these products from when they were originally constructed. Most areas containing hazardous materials have either been fully abated or secured to eliminate hazards. Other hazardous building materials may be unintentional such as mold which can grow on building materials that have abundant moisture and oxygen exposure. ISU EHSS ensures that areas with hazardous building materials are correctly abated, employees and students are properly protected from hazards, and areas that are still unabated have been properly marked and secured.
