Captioning Services

Recording and Auto-Captioning

Captioning services involve creating text-based versions of audio or video content, which help make media accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as those who prefer reading or need help understanding spoken language. These services convert spoken dialogue, sound effects, music cues, and other relevant audio into written form, usually displayed as captions or subtitles on a screen.

There are two main types of captioning:

  1. Closed Captions (CC): These are captions that can be turned on or off by the viewer. They include both the dialogue and non-verbal sounds (e.g., music, sound effects).

  2. Open Captions: These are permanently embedded into the video, meaning they cannot be turned off.

Captioning is commonly used in movies, TV shows, online videos, live broadcasts, educational videos, and many other media formats.

Use Loom, Panopto, Snagit, or Zoom to create video recordings. For additional hardware and software recommendations contact captioning@isu.edu or call 208-282-3559 for more information.
