Career Outlook: In demand... Career Earnings: Going up!

The time is right to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN).The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the job market for RDNs will grow nationally by 11% between 2018 and 2028. The mean annual wage in Idaho increased nearly 21% between May 2020 and May 2022. And, from May 2022-May 2023, the mean salary in Idaho increased an additional 9%.

As preventable diseases and conditions such as hypertension and cardiovascular disease are on the rise, registered dietitians are increasingly more in demand as part of the medical team. Plus, RDNs are needed in public health settings, consulting firms, retail settings, nonprofit organizations, schools, and independent practice.

USPHS Commissioned Corps for Detitians

The US Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps is one of the eight uniformed services of the United States.  USPHS Commissioned Corps dietitian officers have diverse skill sets and serve in a variety of roles, including research, clinical nutrition, food service administration, public health nutrition, health policy, regulatory affairs, and managerial and supervisory roles.

Most dietitian officers are stationed within federal agencies such as Indian Health Service (IHS), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center of Disease and Control (CDC), and the Bureau of Prisons (BOP). USPHS Commissioned Corps officers enjoy leadership opportunities, excellent pay and benefits, and work/life balance, all while improving the health and safety of the Nation. 

2023 Median Salary

The U.S. 2023 median annual salary for a registered dietitian was $69,880, with the median hourly pay being $33.34. Wages differ between states and locations; however the mean annual wage in Idaho increased from $50,670 to $61,530 between May 2020 and May 2022. And, from May 2022- May 2023, from $$61,530 to 67,060.
