Consultation
In addition to intervention and follow-up services, University Counseling and Mental Health Center staff are available for a variety of other consultations with students, parents, faculty, staff, and the community. The most common consultations include debriefing with individuals and departments who have had a critical incident, assisting individuals and departments in working more effectively with students of concern, and providing support and follow-up to individuals and departments undergoing significant change. We also speak with parents, students, faculty, and staff about concerns they may have about a student.
We are open to speaking with parents, friends, staff, and faculty about a range of issues, including:
- Strategies for helping a student connect with the Counseling and Mental Health Center or other services
- Concerns about a particular student who might be experiencing emotional distress or struggling with mental health concerns
- Concerns about the impact of an individual's distressing behaviors on others
- Referrals to community mental health providers and services
Consultation is not the same as therapy.
Due to confidentiality, we may not be able to reveal if the student receives or has received counseling at ISU's Counseling and Mental Health Center, but we can listen to the situation and offer advice/guidance and support depending on the needs of the situation. If you need consultation, or even if you are not sure, call the ISU Counseling and Mental Health Center and ask to speak with a counselor at (208) 282-2130.
You can visit the Student Affairs website for information about additional resources for students or to notify Student Affairs staff about your concerns for an ISU student.
