  • Registered Cosmetologist – 35 years
  • Educational Consultant for Matrix Essentials – 2 ½ years
  • Cosmetology Salon Owner – 14 years
  • Instructor, ISU College of Technology Cosmetology Program – 14 years

Career Highlights

Graduated from ISU Vo-Tech Cosmetology Program in 1982 and came full circle to teach in this incredible program.

Was a member of the Pocatello Cosmetology Association in which I served two years as President and I also belonged to the Idaho Cosmetology Association and the National Cosmetology Association.

I enjoyed working at Matrix Essentials because of the exposure it gave me to more in-depth education and the opportunity to meet cosmetologists from all over the United States as I taught at Trade Shows/West Coast Beauty Show, as well as individual salons in different states.

I have worked with so many different colleagues, clients and students throughout my career of Cosmetology; you become one big family. Owning my own salon was very rewarding in all aspects.

I became an honorary faculty member of a Dudley Beauty College in south Chicago. It was an exceptional time to be able to spend time with the owner, Ms. Betty, and her outstanding faculty and staff and then have the honor bestowed upon me to become a faculty member.

One of Your Favorite Professional Experiences

There are so many great experiences I have had in my career that it is hard to pin point just one. If I had to choose one as an educator, it would be the time I had a student challenge me in a professional manner about a hair color formulation.

The student asked me to let her pick the formula without any guidance or instruction. When she brought the final formula to me, I saw that there was one component missing and told her that it was missing, but I did not tell her what that component was. She felt her formula was correct and would like to proceed with it. I knew that it would look good without the other piece and told her to proceed. When she was finished, she was happy with her color, but she definitely felt that it could have had a little more depth and sparkle to it if she had added another 14 ounces of a certain color, and it was exactly the color I felt was the missing component for her formula.

This situation made my heart swell with pride in this student because she had shown me that I as her teacher was able to relate to her a very difficult scientific process that we deal with in hair color and she was able to visualize the outcome, which helped in the formulation process.

I will always feel honored and blessed to have had the path and journey that the Cosmetology industry has given me. It all started with an incredible education here at ISU V0-Tech/College of Technology. I have met so many great people and have worked with the best of the best. If you love people and making people feel good about themselves, then this is the perfect career to go into.

One of my favorite professional experiences:

I have loved being able to work in the salon with an instructor’s license, which allows me to have students come in and shadow me and see how the salon life really works.  Having clients in my chair and watching the student connect in a new way is amazing!  They get a chance to see how passionate the stylists are in the salon and how we all work as a team.  It’s never a one man show at the salon I am at.  We are very team-oriented and love being a part of all that goes on there.  We teach each other and help where needed.  This is so important for students to see early in their career and I love having the opportunity to help them.

One of my favorite professional experiences:

One of my favorite memories is when I ran the recruiting program for a previous employer. I had the opportunity to visit many high schools in Idaho. I watched students choose to attend Cosmetology and then observed their transformation into happy productive professionals. I find a great deal of satisfaction in being a small part in who they have become. Cosmetology has so many opportunities to change a person’s life and nothing is greater than assisting in that transformation.

One of Your Favorite Professional Experiences

I have been teaching Cosmetology for 27 years now and there are too many to tell. It has been really fun watching a former student come full circle. A former student went to school here about 12 years ago and had a very successful career in the beauty industry. She also started instructing in a school in Idaho Falls. There was a job opening here in the Cosmetology program and she applied and was hired and now we are coworkers. I also will run into former students every once in a while and some of them have told me they wouldn’t be where they are today if wasn’t for me and that makes me very proud of all the hard work I have done. This has been a great career.
