Writing Content

Preparing and organizing your content for effective communication.

Writing for the web is different

Typically, people scan websites rather than read them.

Helpful, effective content should be:

  1. Concise
  2. Scannable
  3. Relevant

Be Concise

Write your content and then cut it in half.

If possible, cut it in half again.

Be aware of academic language.
On the website, writing should be at the 6-9 grade level. Complex writing will be an obstacle for your users.

Be Scannable

No one wants to read long paragraphs on a website.

Ways to make content scannable:

  • Put content in lists when appropriate.
  • Use shorter sentences or paragraphs.
  • Use headings to break up content into manageable chunks.
  • Create visual separation with styled items - header bars, content type themes, etc.
  • Put content in columns.

Be Relevant

It is important to know your audience and be aware of what information is relevant to them.

When considering relevance, ask yourself these questions:

  • Who is this content written for?
  • What is the purpose of this content?
  • What is the central message of this content?

Using these questions may reveal that some of your content is unfocused or unnecessary. This can help you decide what should be on your page and how to display it.
