To emphasize experiential learning, members of ISU’s Communication, Media, and Persuasion (CMP) department are partnering with the Idaho State-Civic Symphony (ISCS) to promote the symphony’s upcoming album with Latin Grammy Award winner Pedro Giraudo and his Quartet.
The group will execute a public relations campaign for the symphony’s April 26 performance and the album, which will be released this fall. Professor Nell Flanders, ISCS Conductor and Artistic Director, collaborated with Latin Grammy winner Pedro Giraudo and his Quartet in the symphony’s February 16 performance to create the album with ISU’s new record label City Creek Records.
CMP students working on the campaign include junior Danna Cruz, and seniors Tylee Johnson, Labelle Knittel, and Jillian Nguyen. The project is part of a senior capstone course, CMP 4446 Public Relations Campaigns.
“It puts me in a position where instead of worrying about the grade I will get I am focused on how best I can serve my client,” Cruz said.
The skills students learn in this real world campaign class provides them with experiences that they can use when they are fresh on the job market after graduation.
“It’s one thing to put a mock campaign together and a totally different thing to actually go out and meet with a client and execute a real campaign,” Nguyen said. “The real life application skills are amazing.”
The symphony's last performance for this season is April 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the Stephens Performing Arts Center. More information about the album will be released this fall.
“I am really excited to be able to work with these women who are just starting their careers,” said Jenni Warren, the executive director of the ISCS. “Collaborating with a department that wants to see students flourish while also helping the community is really special.”
The Idaho State-Civic Symphony is the oldest orchestra in the State of Idaho, having been established early in the 1900s. The symphony is a ISU/community effort taking members from ISU faculty and students as well as the general public.
