The purpose of Career Path Internship (CPI) Program is to provide opportunities for students to be employed both on and off campus as interns in positions concomitant with their academic and professional interests. This program enhances student success by employing students in their educational/career field of choice, giving them hands-on experience enhancing job readiness skills. CPI students in the Department of Biological Sciences usually have two choices; research or teaching (UGTA).
During the first semester, a CPI UGTA shadows/assists another lab instructor by attending the 2-3 hour lab and the instructor meeting each week, and grading assignments. However, during the second semester of CPI funding a UGTA can take over their own lab section if they feel comfortable. Students entering the CPI UGTA program for the first time are encouraged to register for the Biology Teaching Assistant Seminar: BIOL 4499 (1 credit).
CPI UGTAs can work 5-10 hours per week (10-20 per pay period). Time spent on the following activities will be submitted to and approved by Dr. Loxterman:
- time spent in the teaching laboratory with the registered students assisting the instructor, instructing the students, and/or guiding the students
- lab instructor meetings
- online training quizzes
- office hours (when teaching your own section)
- exam proctoring
- grading and entering grades
- preparation of lab reagents and supplies
- preparation of course content such as introduction and quiz presentations
- maintenance of the laboratory
Payroll: Please contact Pam Christensen with questions about payroll such as pay periods.
Travel: Please contact Noreen King to initiate the travel process, reserve an ISU motor pool vehicle, or to get passes. All CPI, GTA, and adjunct lab instructors that live in Pocatello and teach on BOTH the Pocatello and Idaho Falls campuses can either be compensated for travel or use a motor pool vehicle. Instructors will not be compensated for travel or use the motor pool vehicles if they live in; 1) Idaho Falls, or 2) Pocatello but teach ONLY in Idaho Falls. Those instructors that teach in Idaho Falls but do not have an ISU parking permit can request Department Day Use Passes. These passes must have the current date (MM/DD/YY) written in bold permanent marker so it is easily seen by Parking employees. Writing the date in pen or pencil may result in a $30 citation.
