Ten-year-old Lucía’s family lives in the Island of the Sun (Isla del Sol) in the middle of Lake Titicaca in Bolivia; a place that’s as mystical as it is picturesque. When her father breaks from their routine one morning and leaves for the city to make money, Lucía finds it difficult to cope with his absence, building her daily life around the expectations of their reunion.

After school, Lucía and her younger sister Maribel weave Totora reeds into figurines that her mother sells to numerous tourists. But the rhythm of life on the island and the passage of time help her realize her father is no longer the person she longed to have back. She must find her own path. Lucía is thinking of going to the city herself, but she has no money. It’s time she took her destiny into her own hands.

With a subtle commentary on environmental tourism and the exploitation of “the other” that goes two-way,  Catalina Razzini’s touching rural tale masterly captures the landscape of Isla del Sol.

 

La familia de Lucía, una niña de diez años, vive en la Isla del Sol, en medio del lago Titicaca, en Bolivia, un lugar tan místico como pintoresco. Cuando su padre rompe su rutina una mañana y se marcha a la ciudad a ganar dinero, a Lucía le resulta difícil sobrellevar su ausencia y organiza su vida cotidiana en torno a las expectativas de su reencuentro.

Después del colegio, Lucía y su hermana pequeña, Maribel, tejen cañas de totora para hacer figuritas que su madre vende a numerosos turistas. El ritmo de vida en la isla y el paso del tiempo la ayudan a darse cuenta de que su padre ya no es la persona que anhelaba tener de vuelta. Debe encontrar su propio camino. Lucía está pensando en ir ella misma a la ciudad, pero no tiene dinero. Es hora de que tome las riendas de su destino.

Con una sutil crítica sobre el turismo medioambiental y la explotación del “otro” que va en ambos sentidos, el conmovedor relato rural de Catalina Razzini capta magistralmente el paisaje de la Isla del Sol.

Despite working in a disenfranchising factory, Mini Serinita aspires to become a full-time Luchadora, breaking free from societal constraints. Lady Candy, who can see the U.S. border from her house, grapples with visa regulations preventing her from reuniting with her daughters in the United States. Meanwhile, Baby Star, a young single mother with a Lucha Libre childhood, seeks a comeback, embodying the spirit of Mexican passion.

Through their stories, these Luchadoras present a powerful and new image of womanhood in Mexico, challenging stereotypes and showcasing strength, resilience, and determination in the face of societal expectations.

Alegría’s life takes a profound shift upon discovering that her orthodox Jewish brother insists on holding his daughter’s wedding in Melilla. Guided by Dunia, her Arab housekeeper, and Marian, her Christian confidante, Alegría embarks on a journey to connect with her roots while assisting her niece, Yael, in navigating womanhood within a highly conservative male-dominated environment.

Renowned Mexican actress Cecilia Suárez (The House of Flowers, 3 Caminos) takes the lead, infusing the film with her charisma and impeccable comedic timing, amidst a backdrop of familial tumult and conflicting traditions. The film sensitively depicts her coming to terms with her roots and the cultural past she has rejected. She may not want these traditions for herself, but she comes to understand the value they have in her community.

Alegría is also about Melilla, an autonomous, multicultural Spanish city on Africa’s north coast, where Jews, Muslims, and Christians mix and mingle and come together to make the wedding happen. It is a gorgeous evocation of a fascinating and beautiful corner of the world not often seen on-screen.

La vida de Alegría da un profundo giro cuando descubre que su hermano, un judío ortodoxo, insiste en celebrar la boda de su hija en Melilla. Guiada por Dunia, su ama de llaves árabe, y Marian, su confidente cristiana, Alegría se embarca en un viaje para conectar con sus raíces mientras ayuda a su sobrina, Yael, a desenvolverse como mujer en un entorno muy conservador dominado por los hombres.

 

La reconocida actriz mexicana Cecilia Suárez (La casa de las flores, 3 Caminos) asume el papel protagónico, infundiendo a la película su carisma y su impecable sentido del humor, en medio de un trasfondo de tumultos familiares y tradiciones contradictorias. La película muestra con sensibilidad cómo se enfrenta a sus raíces y al pasado cultural que ha rechazado. Puede que no quiera esas tradiciones para sí misma, pero acaba comprendiendo su valor dentro de su comunidad.

Alegría también trata de Melilla, una ciudad española autónoma y multicultural situada en la costa norte de África, donde judíos, musulmanes y cristianos se mezclan y se unen para celebrar la boda. Es una magnífica evocación de un fascinante y bello rincón del mundo que no se ve a menudo en la pantalla.
