The Veterans’ Sanctuary at Idaho State University is the first transition and support program of its kind in the United States. Our mission is simple; to provide first-class service to military veterans of all eras attending ISU. We have a support team to provide assistance with G.I. Bill benefits and to offer guidance on campus from the moment student veterans arrive until they graduate. Our “one-stop-shop” approach allows vets to access all campus services through a single office.
The Veterans’ Sanctuary is ISU’s response to the urgent need for veterans’ services expressed by veterans’ groups throughout the country.
The program features:
- Free tutoring in all subjects, often provided by qualified veterans
- Sections of general education classes set aside for veterans and taught by faculty members who are veterans themselves or supporters
- Orientations for new student veterans
- Free group and individual counseling
- Employment assistance
- Scholarships
- Opportunities for outdoor recreation with other veterans
- Events and activities for student veterans, and much more
This fall, ISU will open the Veterans’ Residence at Nichols Hall, the only veterans’ specific housing on a college campus in the U.S. It will be located on the Pocatello campus.
In recognition of our efforts, G.I. Jobs Magazine has listed ISU as a military-friendly school for 2010 and 2011, an honor bestowed upon the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the United States. In addition, the American Legion and Veterans of a Foreign War (VFW) have awarded ISU with national citations.
