School of Performing Arts: Music


Whether you want a career in music or just the pleasure of performing or listening, there are courses of interest for you at ISU. The Department of Music offers a variety of music degrees and a music minor.

New Students

An audition is required for admission as a music major, music minor, or for scholarship. The Audition Days this year are scheduled for February 22 and March 15. You may fill out the Audition/Scholarship Form online by clicking apply now at the bottom of this page or Call 208-282-3636 or write to the music office (e-mail: to obtain the form.


The Department of Music is located in the Fine Arts Building, which includes a 450-seat recital hall called Goranson Hall. Most Music Department concerts are performed in the 1200-seat Joseph C. & Cheryl H. Jensen Grand Concert Hall, which opened in 2005. This beautiful concert hall is located in the L.E. & Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center.

Music Ensembles

A variety of performing music ensembles are available to ISU students. Some ensembles are also open to community members. These performing groups include bands, choirs, orchestra, and chamber ensembles.

Scholarships / Auditions

Now is the time to apply for your music audition. Applications are being accepted for the 2014-15 academic year. Auditions are by apppointment and should be scheduled in advance. Auditions are heard for both admittance to the program and/or for scholarship opportunities.

Auditions for the 2015-16 academic year will be held on:
February 21, 2015 in the Stephens Performing Arts Center &
March 7, 2015 in the Fine Arts Building

Scholarships are available to both majors and nonmajors for participation in music ensembles. All scholarships are awarded on the basis of an audition. The Department of Music is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music.

Spotlight on Music

Verdi Requiem

April 25 & 26; 7:30pm
Jensen Grand Concert Hall

This two-performance event will feature four guest soloists and more than 150 members of the ISU Concert Choir and Camerata Singers, an impressive sight and sound in combination with the Symphony. They will be directed by Dr. Scott Anderson in Verdi’s Requiem, a thrilling symphonic piece with virtuosic solo moments, and one that is hailed by conductors, vocalists, and musicians alike as being on their “must-perform” short lists.
