Who.We
Are and What We Have to Offer . . .
A
hearty welcome to the Idaho State University
Outdoor Program. We are a university-based outdoor recreation and education
program and offer classes, workshops, trips and outdoor informational services.
On our web site you'll find hundreds of pages of information on such outdoor
activities as as backpacking, climbing, kayaking, rafting, skiing, cross-country
and backcountry skiing, outdoor safety and survival, dutch oven cooking,
navigation, and much more.
We're
one of the few programs in the country based on the common
adventurer philosophy. That means that, except for classes, we don't
charge fees for trips. All trip costs--and responsibilities--are shared
among the members of the group.
Along
with trips, we sponsor a series of evening programs including slide shows
and informational talks which are listed on our calendar
of events. If you want to hone your outdoor skills, we also have over
30 different classes that you can take. Some examples of classes
and workshops are: kayaking, rock climbing, bicycling, map & compass,
outdoor survival, avalanche safety, cross-country skiing, outdoor leadership,
etc.
Housed
in our office is the Intermountain Outdoor Resource Center which is the
Intermountain region's most extensive collection of outdoor resources.
Included in the center are books, current and back issues of outdoor periodicals,
environmental impact statements, videos, equipment catalogs, and over 1,000
US Topographical maps.
We
have been gradually adding lots of helpful outdoor information to our web
pages--and we plan to add much more. See the Outdoor
Informational Resources page for how-to articles, trip planning suggestions,
outdoor hints, equipment lists, and avalanche and river information.
For information
on good outdoor books, and access to free on-line guides, software and
videos, take a peek at our publications
page. Also found there is material for those in the field of outdoor education,
including the proceedings of National and International Conferences on
Outdoor Recreation and Education and reprints of professional papers.
Outdoor
literature is a passion of ours, and we believe that authors and publishers
who are doing outstanding work need to be recognized. Thus, we have helped
launch the National Outdoor
Book Awards which honors the field's best writing and publishing.
Some
of our special events include the Pocatello
Pump which is one of the Northwest's oldest and friendliest climbing
gatherings. Dutch oven
cooking has always been an important part of the traditions of this
part of the west, and each year we hold a cookoff and publish a cookbook
full of tasty recipes from our cooking classes. During the winter season,
we maintain a system of five yurts
from which you can cross-country ski, snowshoe and carve turns to your
heart's delight.
We
depend on the generosity of friends to keep our programs going. Information
on how you can help is found on the donations
page. If you're a past participant, you may be interested in the
alumni
page.
Working
side by side with us is the Cooperative Wilderness Handicapped Outdoor
Group (C.W. HOG) which
offers outdoor activities and adaptive classes for people with disabilities.
A
more complete list of resources and information available on our web pages
