Session Description

Student Development Theory

Whether you're new to the theories and ideas of student development or looking for a helpful refresher, join us for discussions of some of the big theories of student development and for a few easy steps to start applying theory into your advising sessions.

ISU Advising 101

Are you new to faculty advising? Maybe you need a refresher on ISU advising systems (Degree Works, class registration, and more)? This session will help you break down and understand the “nuts and bolts” of advising at ISU.

Advisor Burnout & Self-Care

You have to help yourself before you can help others. Come to this session for a conversation on maintaining a healthy and sustainable work-life balance, insights into the most common causes and warning signs of burnout, and to learn some self-love and self-care practices you can put into action today to help prevent it.

Supporting Students in Distress

As advisors, we often meet with students struggling with their mental health or stressful circumstances. This session will help give you the skills to confidently support these students, deescalate high-stress situations, and effectively connect students with the right resources to help.

Advising Student-Athletes

A great opportunity to learn about best practices for guiding and advising student-athletes. Discussion will include current student-athlete advising policies, data on the student-athlete experience, and resources around campus to assist in working with student-athletes.

Transfer Students (Panel)

Whether they’ve come from across the country or just down the road from a community college, transfer students come with a unique set of needs. Join us for a panel discussion of the challenges faced by transfer students and what we can do to effectively support their transition.

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is an important skill to have. But what does it mean, and why is it crucial? Learn how identifying and managing your emotions can strengthen your ability to guide and help yourself and others.

If there is a topic or area that you feel has been overlooked and would like to be included, or if you are interested in participating, please contact the Advising Community at Idaho State at advcommunity@isu.edu
